FAQs
Here is a list of some frequently asked
health questions:
Are you a dietitian?
I am not a dietitian, I am a naturopath and nutritional consultant.
Dietitians typically work in medical or health care facilities
(hospitals, for instance), food
services, etc. and their training is usually based on the four food groups and
the current food pyramid.
My training, as a naturopath and nutritional
consultant, prepared me to consider each person as an individual and
develop a unique set of recommendations based on the information I
gather during your appointment. Dietitians develop diet plans, but I
prefer to teach you health-building strategies that go beyond diet.
You are more than what you eat and you are not just flesh and
blood. I think it is crucial to consider
multiple aspects of your life that may be contributing to your current
health status and I am convinced that to ignore the emotional, mental
and energetic aspects of an illness or condition means only limited
success in health recovery. Finally, dietitians are not typically trained in
the use of nutritional supplementation. With today's food quality and
complex health conditions, I find that in supporting the
body with high quality nutritional supplements (along with a program
that addresses other aspects of a condition) is necessary to effectively help
the body balance
and speed recovery time.

What do you have to offer me?
In
addition to being a naturopath and health consultant, I am also a consumer. Over
the years, maybe like you, I've tried to save money by self-diagnosing or researching a
condition on my own through books, the internet, and employees at the
health food stores. Sometimes, all I had in the end is a lot of information that
confused me. Other times, I would use what I call a
"shotgun approach" (an approach that would hit a broad range of
conditions) but this proved slow and expensive.
Now what I do, and what I try to do
for my clients, is focus laser-like on primary challenges
to expose the root that is causing the situation. My gardening background tells me that when the root is
dealt with, the symptoms will be, too.
Like a health coach, I encourage my clients to counter their
health issues with life-enhancing activities.

Why do I need supplements?
Nothing detoxifies the body except plants. It makes
sense that the fruits and vegetables can only be as healthy as the soil
they are grown in, but now that our food can be radiated, fumigated and
sprayed with pesticides, even healthy food may not be so healthy by the
time it reaches our store shelves.
Certainly if you are experiencing health challenges, the more high
quality nutrition you can offer your body, the greater the potential it
has to heal itself. People of all ages and with severe conditions
have used nutrition to turn their diagnosis around and experience life
and vitality again.
With today's food choices, even
healthy people benefit from nutritional supplementation and often use
them to help them stay healthy.

Are all
supplements the same?
Unfortunately not. A landmark study (JAMA, 2000) showed that
97.5% of randomly selected herbal products were either toxic or
ineffective or both. In other words, only 2.5% of supplements
tested were nontoxic and effective.
What are some toxins that can be found in health supplements?
Unfortunately, toxic tagalongs are now commonly found in many
nutritional supplements such as magnesium stearate, talcum powder
(talc), "natural flavors," MSG (monosodium glutamate) and others.
Although the supplement label may list some of the items, it is
impossible to tell from the label alone if any of the ingredients
have been fumigated, irradiated, or solvent extracted.
Supplements with toxic tagalongs may provide some initial
benefit, helping you to feel good for a few weeks or months.
However, taking them long-term can be a potential problem that can
end up blocking recovery. The simple yet powerful QRA technique can
help you be confident in the products that you consume. You can
learn the technique yourself and use it on more than just
supplements, too!
